Ed Kirtley is a native of Boise City Oklahoma. As associate dean, Ed leads the engineering extension programs and services, many of which serve rural communities of Oklahoma. Ed teaches undergraduate and graduate courses focusing on leadership, public policy for fire protection and emergency management, and community engagement. His research focus is building social capital in rural, underserved and high-risk communities. Before coming to OSU in 2004, Ed spent 24 years in the professional fire service. Since 2000 Ed has worked extensively with the South African fire service and community leaders to build fire protection and disaster preparedness capacity in townships and informal settlements. In 2017 Ed led the first group of OSU fire protection and fire/emergency administration students to South Africa on a cooperative program with Stellenbosch University. Ed earned a Ph.D. in fire and emergency management administration from OSU, a M.S. in curriculum and instruction from Chapman University, and a B.S. in engineering and technical management from Denver Technical College. Ed is a proud veteran of the United State Marines Corps.
